In 1937 the world witnesses the following: In February, John Steinbeck's novella of the Great Depression Of Mice and Men is published. On May 6 in Lakehurst, New Jersey the German airship Hindenburg bursts into flame while attempting to land, killing 36 passengers and crew. The Palmer High School Class of 1937 graduates 17 seniors at commencement exercises that same month. On July 2, Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear after departing from New Guinea as part of Earhart’s attempt to become the first woman to fly around the world. On December 21, Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first feature-length animated cartoon with sound, opens in theaters. The following day, New York’s Lincoln Tunnel, connecting New York City to Weehawken, New Jersey, under the Hudson River opens to road traffic. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1938.

In 1936 the world witnesses the following: On January 15, the first American building to be completely covered in glass is completed in Toledo, Ohio, for the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. 13 Palmer High School seniors in Miller City, Ohio graduate in May. Ohio State track star Jesse Owens brings home four gold medals from the summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany as Owens was victorious in the long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and 4X100 meter relay. President Franklin Roosevelt wins election to his second term, defeating Republican Kansas Governor Alf Landon in the November general election. Weekly news periodical Life magazine begins publication on November 23. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1937.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1935. In 1935 the world witnesses the following: On January 8 in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley is born. At Palmer High School in May, 11 seniors graduate. The first Major League Baseball night game is played on May 24 at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field between the Reds and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. The world’s first parking meters are installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 16. On September 2, the Labor Day Hurricane makes landfall in the Florida Keys with winds of over 185 mph. The Category 5 storm is the strongest hurricane to ever strike the United States and claims the lives of 423 people. The most popular children’s toy at Christmas was a Shirley Temple doll. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1936.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1934. In 1934 the world witnesses the following: On May 5, the first Three Stooges short is released. On May 23, outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow – of Bonnie & Clyde infamy – are ambushed and gunned down in rural Louisiana. On the same day, the “Battle of Toledo” begins during the Auto-Lite strike in Toledo, lasting four days. That same month, 17 seniors at Palmer High School in Miller City, Ohio graduate. In July, “Public Enemy No. 1” John Dillinger is shot and killed by FBI agents outside the Biograph theater in Chicago. In Dayton on August 19, the first All-American Soap Box Derby is held. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1935.

In 1933 the world witnesses the following: Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge begins in San Francisco in January. At the end of the month, The Lone Ranger debuts on American radio. The original film version of King Kong premieres at Radio City Music Hall and the RKO Roxy Theatre in New York City on March 2. the following day in South Dakota the Mount Rushmore National Monument is dedicated even though the monument itself would not be completed until several years later. The Palmer High School Class of 1933 walks down the aisle in May as 20 students graduate. On June 6, the first drive-in theater opens in Camden, New Jersey. The 21st Amendment to the Constitution goes into effect in December and ends the Prohibition era in the United States. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1934.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1932. In 1932 the world witnesses the following: On March 25, Tarzan the Ape Man starring Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weismuller premieres. Both the winter and summer Olympic Games are held in the United States as the winter events are held in Lake Placid, New York and the summer events in Los Angeles, California. 16 seniors receive their Palmer High School diplomas in May. Aviator Amelia Earhart flies from the United States to Derry, Northern Ireland in 14 hours 54 minutes. Democrat New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt soundly defeats incumbent Herbert Hoover in the November U.S. presidential election. On December 27, Radio City Music Hall opens in New York City. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1933.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1931. In 1931 the world witnesses the following: On February 14, the original Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi hits theaters in the U.S. The Star Spangled Banner is officially adopted as the national anthem by Congress on March 4. At Palmer High School in May in Miller City, Ohio 10 graduates receive their diplomas. On October 4, Dick Tracy, the comic strip detective character makes his first appearance in the Detroit Mirror newspaper. In Chicago later that month, famous gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Three weeks later on October 25, the 3,500-foot George Washington Bridge opens to traffic in New York making it the longest span bridge in the world. On November 21, horror film Frankenstein is released in New York City theaters. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1932.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1930. In 1930 the world witnesses the following: American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, while studying photographs in February, confirms the existence of the ninth planet, Pluto. Workers in New York City begin construction of the Empire State Building on March 17. Three days later, Colonel Sanders opens the first Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin, Kentucky. Warner Brothers releases their first cartoon series, Looney Tunes, on April 19. With just 5 students, the first graduating class of the 1930s at Palmer High School walks down the aisle in May. On July 31, CBS radio drama The Shadow airs its first episode. 3M introduces Scotch Tape on September 8. The Dust Bowl, a period of severe dust storms that severely and negatively affected agriculture in the Great Plains, begins in the summer of 1930 and will intermittently continue for six more years. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1931.

Miller City - New Cleveland positivity committee hosted their 2nd Annual SOUPer bowl! Amazing talent was brought to the table! Our award winner last year, Mrs. Inkrott, helped the committee in choosing the SOUPer bowl champion for this year. Congrats to Mrs. Croft for her amazing cheddar potato soup! She now is the holder of the Giant Spoon until next year!

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1929. In 1929 the world witnesses the following: In Chicago on February 14, seven rival gangsters to Al Capone are gunned down in a warehouse in the infamous “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre”. The first-ever Academy Awards (Oscars) are held on May 16 in Hollywood as Best Picture goes to William A. Wellman’s film Wings. That same month, 11 Palmer High School seniors receive their diploma. In August, the radio comedy show Amos & Andy debuts. J.C. Penney opens a store in Delaware, officially making it a national chain with one store in all 48 American states. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 occurs the week of October 24, leading America into the dark times of the Great Depression. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1930.

In Miller City, Ohio, 9 Palmer High School graduates receive their diploma in May. The New York Yankees sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series in October as Yankees slugger Babe Ruth smashes three home runs in the final game. In the November U. S. Presidential election, Republican Herbert Hoover defeats Democrat Alfred E. Smith. Congress approves funding on December 21 for the construction of the Boulder Dam, later renamed as the Hoover Dam. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1929.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Palmer High School graduating class of 1927. In 1927, the world witnesses the following: From April 22 to May 5, the Great Mississippi Flood affects 700,000 people in the greatest national disaster in United States history. On May 21, Charles Lindbergh completes the first trans-Atlantic flight in his plane The Spirit of St. Louis. That same month, Palmer High School’s third graduating class receives its diplomas. The class contains 9 graduates including Ferdinand Ball who will go on to become Superintendent of Miller City School many years later. The Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System (later known as CBS) is formed and goes on the air on September 18 with 47 radio stations. In November, the 2 ½ mile-long Holland Tunnel, connecting New York City with New Jersey beneath the Hudson River, opens its lanes. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1928.

In 1926 the world witnesses the following: On May 1, Ford Motor Company becomes the first large American company to adopt a five-day, 40-hour week for workers in its automotive factories. The rate of pay is $5 per day. The second Palmer High School graduating class of 12 students receives their diplomas in May as the five male graduates – Clarence Foltz, Edmund Heinze, Albert Little, Gaylon Shank and Robert Wing – become the first boys to graduate from Palmer High School. Winnie-the-Pooh, written by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard is published on October 14. On Halloween, famous escape artist Harry Houdini dies at the age of 52. US Route 66 is established on November 11. On November 15, the NBC radio network opens with 24 stations. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1927.

We begin our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the inaugural graduating class of 1925. In 1925, the world witnesses the following: The New Yorker magazine publishes its first issue on February 21. President Calvin Coolidge’s inauguration ceremony is held on March 4, and his inauguration address is the first one to be broadcast on radio. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is published on April 10. Known as Palmer High School in 1925, the very first class of four-year high school students graduates on May 15 in Miller City, Ohio. The all-female class of 4 students is comprised of the following students: Mathilda Ball, Clara Dobmeyer, Helen Kern and Mary Miller. On June 6, Walter Percy Chrysler founds the Chrysler Corporation. The Grand Ole Opry, a weekly country music stage concert in Nashville, Tennessee debuts on November 28, as a one-hour radio “barn dance” on WSM. Popular types of dances included the Fox Trot, the Waltz and the Tango. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1926.

Congratulations to Anna Keeler for her performance with The All-State High School Chorus this past Saturday. Anna auditioned in May for this prestegious opportunity. The performace took place at the 2024 Ohio Music Education Associaiton Professional Development Conference in Columbus. Thanks Anna for representing MC in such an awesome way! Go Wildcats!
