In 1952 the world witnesses the following: A patent is issued to Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver for their invention of the bar code. The first rock and roll concert takes place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Moondog Coronation Ball of 1952 at Cleveland Arena on March 21. On May 27, Miller City High School holds its commencement exercises as 20 graduates receive their diplomas. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower defeats Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson to become the 34th President of the United States. Perhaps in a related event, American Bandstand premiers on a Philadelphia TV station in October. The most popular children’s Christmas gifts are Mr. Potato Head and PEZ dispensers. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1953.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1951. In 1951 the world witnesses the following: Nielsen television ratings are introduced to the public. The most-watched show is Texaco Star Theater while I Love Lucy is third. For just $1.99 people could buy a pair of “Howdy Doody” children’s slippers. Following the success of Cinderella a year earlier, Walt Disney releases Alice in Wonderland to movie theaters in London. On May 29 the first North Pole flight in a single-engine aircraft occurs and in Miller City, Ohio 18 graduates from Miller City High School are awarded their diplomas. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1952.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1949. In 1949 the world witnesses the following: The first Emmy Awards are presented at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Hollywood, California. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical South Pacific, opens on Broadway on April 7. In late May in Miller City, Ohio 20 Miller City High School seniors graduate. The first television Western-themed show Hopalong Cassidy premieres in June on NBC. On October 26, minimum wage in the United States jumps from 40 cents to 75 cents. The first Volkswagen Beetle is brought to the U.S. by Dutch businessman Ben Pon, but only two sold in 1949. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1950.

Miller City High School’s Class of 1948 sees 17 seniors receive their diplomas on May 27. The Cleveland Indians triumph in the 1948 World Series over the Boston Braves. President Truman wins re-election over Thomas Dewey despite post-election day headlines that declared Dewey the victor. Vocabulary-themed board game Scrabble is released. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1949.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1947. In 1947 the world witnesses the following: Miller City High School graduates 11 seniors in May. Jackie Robinson signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers to become the first African-American baseball player in Major League Baseball. Later that year, Robinson’s Dodgers are defeated by the New York Yankees 4 games to 3 in the very first televised World Series. The UFO craze amongst Americans begins as several “reported” sightings are made by both civilians and military, including the famous Roswell sighting on July 7. On October 14, Air Force pilot Chuck Yeager flies the Bell X-1 plane at speeds over 700 mph breaking the sound barrier. The news television program Meet the Press debuts on NBC in November. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1948.

The bigger bleacher side will be divided a little differently in order to accommodate the large quantity of Crestview fans that we are expecting. We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1946. In 1946 the world witnesses the following: NFL rival league the All-American Football Conference held its inaugural season. The fledgling Cleveland Browns behind head coach Paul Brown and quarterback Otto Graham claimed the 1946 championship. 15 Miller City High School seniors graduate in May. In New York City on June 6, the Basketball Association of America is formed and plays its first game five months later on November 6 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto as the host Huskies fell to the New York Knicks 68-66. The league would later come to be known as the National Basketball Association. In July, comedy duo Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis make their stage debut at Club 500 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In November in Chicago, a branch of the Exchange National Bank opens the first 10 drive-thru teller windows. Five days before Christmas, Frank Capra’s heartwarming film It’s A Wonderful Life is released in New York theaters. A day after Christmas, the Flamingo Hotel opens on the Las Vegas strip. We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1945. In 1945 the world witnesses the following: On April 12, President Roosevelt passes away suddenly making vice-president Harry Truman the 33rd President of the United States. Three weeks later on May 8, the Allies accept Germany’s unconditional surrender, thus ending the war in the European theatre. Days later in Miller City, Ohio 26 seniors graduate from Miller City High School. On August 6 and 9, the United States drops atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. The Japanese would surrender five days later on August 14, thus ending World War II in the Pacific theatre. In December, the United States Senate votes 65-7 in favor of U.S. entry into the United Nations. Invented in 1943, but released to the public just before Christmas is the toy known as the Slinky. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1946.
