We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1963.
In 1963 the world witnesses the following: The Beach Boys rocket to fame with their #1 Billboard single “Surfin’ U.S.A.”. Ohio native and professional golfer Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters in April, earning his first of what would be a record-high six green jackets. On May 15, the ninth and final Mercury mission launched with astronaut Gordon Cooper at the controls. Nearly two weeks later, on May 28, 33 seniors graduate from Miller City High School. On August 28, Martin Luther King delivers his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. In September, The Pro Football Hall of Fame opens in Canton, Ohio. On November 22, President Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas while riding in a motorcade on his way to deliver a speech. Vice-President Lyndon Johnson is sworn into office hours later making him the 36th President of the United States.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1962.
In 1962 the world witnesses the following: On February 4, Danny Thomas founds St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, Ohio native John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit Earth. In March, Philadelphia Sixers center Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a single NBA basketball game. On May 25, the Isley Brothers release “Twist and Shout” and in Miller City, Ohio 19 graduates receive their diplomas at Miller City High School. At Rice University in September, President Kennedy reaffirms America’s commitment to putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The Jetsons premieres on ABC that same month. On October 1, Johnny Carson takes over as permanent host of NBC’s late-night The Tonight Show. Later that month and lasting for nearly two weeks, the Cuban Missile Crisis takes the world to the brink of nuclear disaster.

DISASTER RELIEF DRIVE
Miller City-New Cleveland school will be accepting items in need for the Indian Lake Area.
Items in need are: bottled water, personal care items, cleaning supplies, toilet paper/paper towels,
baby items (diapers, wipes etc.) If you would like to donate any of these items, you can send it with a student or drop them off at the main entrance lobby.
Collection will take place: Monday, March 18th - Wednesday, March 20th. Items will be delivered to Indian Lake School. Any additional items will be taken to other places affected by Thursday night's storms.

In 1961 the world witnesses the following: On May 5, Alan Shepard becomes the first American to enter space. On May 25, President Kennedy announces the United States’ goal of putting a man on the moon before the decade is out. The following day in Miller City, Ohio, 31 seniors are awarded their high school diplomas. On October 1, Yankee Roger Maris swats his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth’s 34-year old record. Minimum wage in 1961 is $1.15 and the top three television shows in 1961 are all Western-themed: Wagon Train, Bonanza, and Gunsmoke.

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson. Tickets are $12 at the door.

In 1960 the world witnesses the following: On May 25, 32 Miller City High School seniors graduate. On September 26, presidential nominees Richard Nixon (R) and John F. Kennedy (D) participate in the first televised presidential debate. Four days later, animated sitcom The Flintstones airs its first episode on ABC. In November 1960, John F. Kennedy wins the presidential election in a narrow victory over Richard Nixon. The average cost of a gallon of gas in 1960 is 25 cents and a first-class stamp costs 4 cents. The popular children’s Christmas gifts of 1960 are an Etch-a-Sketch, Legos and Barbie doll.

In 1959 the world witnesses the following: On January 3, Alaska becomes the 49th U.S. state. On February 3, rock n’ roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) are killed in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa just hours after their joint concert. The tragedy is later termed as “The Day the Music Died.” Later that month the first Daytona 500 stock car race is held with Lee Petty as the winner. In April, NASA announces its selection of the “Mercury 7” original astronauts. On May 28, Miller City High School graduates 27 seniors. On August 21, Hawaii becomes the 50th and final U.S. state.

In 1958 the world witnesses the following: 14-year old Bobby Fischer wins the United States Chess Championship in January. 21 seniors graduate from Miller City High School on May 28. The first Pizza Hut restaurant opens in Wichita, Kansas in June. In July, the first plastic hula hoop is marketed to the public. 25 million are sold that year. That same month, Congress formally creates the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

West Side Story opens on Broadway in September. The Space Race’s first victory is claimed by the Soviet Union as Sputnik is launched into orbit on October 4. On the first day of November, Michigan’s two peninsulas are connected to road traffic as the famous Mackinac Bridge opens to traffic. Also in 1957, Burger King’s Whopper sells for 37 cents, Wham-O Company produces the world’s first frisbee and American Bandstand, hosted by Dick Clark, becomes a nationally-televised show.

In 1956 the world witnesses the following: “Sock Hops” became a household term as they earn their name due to the fact that school-age dancers had to take their shoes off to protect the varnished cafeteria and gymnasium floors. On May 29, 18 seniors graduate from Miller City High School. On June 8, General Electric introduces the first “snooze” alarm clock. On July 24, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis perform at New York’s Copacabana Club marking their last appearance as a comedy duo. On September 9, nearly 83% of American households tune in to The Ed Sullivan Show to watch Elvis Presley’s live performance. In October, Yankee pitcher Don Larsen pitches the World Series’s first and only perfect game in Game 5 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. President Eisenhower carries 41 of 48 states in the November presidential election again defeating Adlai Stevenson to win a second term. Originally invented in Cincinnati as a coal soot remover, Play-Doh becomes a popular children’s toy.

In 1955 the world witnesses the following: On New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California the Ohio State Buckeyes and Heisman Trophy winner Hopalong Cassady defeat the USC Trojans 20-7 in the rain and mud of the Rose Bowl to give Coach Woody Hayes his first national championship. In April, Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine for children receives full FDA approval. Later that same month Ray Kroc opens his first McDonald’s chain restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. At Miller City High School in Miller City, Ohio on May 31, 13 seniors graduate. On July 9, Bill Haley and the Comets’s “Rock Around the Clock” becomes the first rock ‘n roll single to top the Billboard charts. Eight days later Disneyland theme park opens in Anaheim, California. Popular television shows that year included The $64,000 Question, I Love Lucy, The Ed Sullivan Show and The Jack Benny Show.

In 1954 the world witnesses the following: On May 16, National Education Television – to be known later as PBS – is launched on cable television. The following day the U.S. Supreme Court rules that school segregation is unconstitutional in the landmark case, Brown vs. Board of Education. Also in May, British runner Roger Bannister became the first human to run a mile in less than four minutes (3:59.6). On May 27, 19 Miller City High School seniors are awarded their diplomas. On September 3, the last new radio episode of The Lone Ranger is broadcast, ending a 21-year 2,956-episode run. RCA produces the first color televisions for public use. The first commercially manufactured transistor radio, the Regency TR-1 from Texas Instruments, is introduced for sale to the public in November.

On Tuesday, May 26 in Miller City, Ohio the Miller City High School graduates 18 seniors. A week later in London, England 27-year old Princess Elizabeth of York is crowned as Queen Elizabeth II, beginning her eventual record-setting 70-year reign as Britain’s monarch. In July, the United States, China, North Korea and South Korea sign an armistice agreement to end the Korean War. Matchbox Cars become a popular children’s toy.
