In 1986 the world witnesses the following: On January 28 just 73 seconds after launch the space shuttle Challenger explodes causing seven U.S. astronauts to perish including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. In March, Halley’s Comet reaches its closest point to the Earth during its once-every-75 years visit to the solar system. On April 13 in Augusta, Georgia 46-year old Jack Nicklaus shoots a back-nine 30 at the Masters to win his sixth green jacket and 18th major golf tournament. Soviet nuclear energy facility Chernobyl experiences a catastrophic accident on April 28, resulting in the surrounding area becoming uninhabitable and even worse – an unknown amount of deaths and life-threatening diseases amongst the population. Action film Top Gun starring Tom Cruise debuts in U.S. movie theaters on May 16. Two weeks later on May 30, 34 seniors in Miller City High School’s Class of 1986 receive their diplomas. As the Cold War continues, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Reykjavik, Iceland in October for a ten-day summit for discussions on scaling back each country’s nuclear missile arsenals in Europe. Care Bears are the popular toy of 1986.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1985.
In 1985 the world witnesses the following: On April 23, Coca-Cola changes its traditional recipe and announces the release of New Coke. The ensuing and overwhelmingly negative response causes the company to return to the original formula in just over two months. On June 7, the 40 seniors of the Miller City High School Class of 1983 graduate. The summer blockbuster film Back to the Future is released on July 3. The multi-venue benefit concert Live Aid is held on July 13 in cities around the world including London and Philadelphia. The most memorable performance is the 20-minute set of rock band Queen at Wembley Stadium. At Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium on September 11, the Reds’ Pete Rose becomes Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader with his 4,192nd career hit. On October 18, the Nintendo Entertainment System hits the shelves in U.S. stores. Microsoft Corporation releases Windows 1.0 on November 20.

In 1984 the world witnesses the following: On January 22 the Los Angeles Raiders destroy the Washington Redskins 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII, but perhaps more famously Apple Computer airs its “1984” commercial to advertise the release of its personal computer the Apple Macintosh. The ad is an allusion to George Orwell’s novel 1984 which describes a dystopian future and Apple used the ad to send a message about its nonconformity in the world of technology. On May 25, 41 seniors graduate from Miller City High School. On June 4, Bruce Springsteen releases his latest album, Born in the U.S.A. Four days later, summer movies Gremlins and Ghostbusters hit the silver screen. Beginning on July 28 and lasting two weeks, the Summer Olympic Games are held in Los Angeles. Sprinter Carl Lewis equals Jesse Owens’ 1936 feat by winning four gold medals. Female gymnast Mary Lou Retton wins gold in the all-around competition and the men’s basketball team led by guard Michael Jordan take home the gold. In October, Kirk Gibson and the Detroit Tigers defeat the San Diego Padres in five games in the World Series to claim their fourth World championship. The 1984 presidential election occurs on November 6 with incumbent Republican President Ronald Reagan carrying 49 states in a landslide victory over Democratic nominee Walter Mondale. December sees the release of Beverly Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy.

In 1983 the world witnesses the following: Setting a record for the most-watched television broadcast of all time, M*A*S*H airs its final episode on CBS on February 28. On May 20 in Miller City, Ohio the Miller City High School Class of 1983 graduates 56 seniors. Five days later, George Lucas’s third Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi, is released in U.S. theaters. At Cape Canaveral on June 18, Space Shuttle Challenger launches Sally Ride, America’s first female astronaut, into space. On November 18, A Christmas Story is released. Two days later television movie The Day After, a fictional movie about a full-scale nuclear exchange between the United States and Soviet Union, is aired on ABC with an estimated 100 million tuning in. Nearly two weeks later on December 2, Michael Jackson’s music video for “Thriller” is broadcast for the first time. The popular kids’ toy at Christmas is the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.

In 1982 the world witnesses the following: On January 7, the Commodore 64 8-bit home computer is launched. Late Night with David Letterman debuts on NBC on February 1 with Bill Murray as Letterman’s first guest. On the first day of May, the 1982 World’s Fair begins in Knoxville, Tennessee. 52 seniors from Miller City High School’s Class of 1982 graduate on May 21. Poltergeist is released in movie theaters across the country on June 4. The following week, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. makes its debut. On October 1 in Orlando, Florida the EPCOT Center opens to the public. Pop music star Michael Jackson releases his latest album called Thriller on November 30.

In 1981 the world witnesses the following: On January 19, the United States and Iran sign an agreement to release 52 American hostages after fourteen months of being held in captivity. After nineteen years as anchor of the CBS Evening News, Walter Cronkite signs off on March 6 for the last time. President Reagan survives an attempted assassination outside a Washington, D.C. hotel on March 30. NASA’s Space Shuttle program has its first launch on April 12 as the Columbia lifts off from Cape Canaveral. In Miller City, Ohio on May 22, Miller City High School holds its commencement ceremony with 64 seniors receiving their diplomas. In the era of the summer blockbusters, Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark hits theaters on June 12 the same day Major League Baseball players go on strike. Players end the strike on August 9. Popular arcade game Donkey Kong is released in July. On the first day of August, MTV (Music Television) debuts on cable television. On September 25, Sandra Day O’ Connor is sworn in as the first female Supreme Court justice.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1980.
In 1980 the world witnesses the following: America is introduced to the Rubik’s Cube and the Sony Walkman. On February 22 at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York the U.S. men’s hockey team — made up of 20 fresh-faced college amateurs — upsets the mighty Soviet Union team 4-3 in the medal round. As the seconds tick down to zero, enthusiastic ABC announcer Al Michaels famously asks the viewing audience, “Do you believe in miracles?!”. Michaels’ commentary leads to the game forever being known as The Miracle on Ice. President Carter announces on March 21 that the United States will boycott the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow as part of the United States’s opposition to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. On May 18, Mount St. Helens erupts in Washington state, claiming the lives of 57 and causing an estimated $3 billion in damage. On May 21, the sequel to Star Wars — The Empire Strikes Back — is released in theaters. Arcade game Pac-Man is released on May 22. The following day on May 23, 54 seniors graduate from Miller City High School. In the November general election, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan defeats incumbent President Jimmy Carter in a landslide victory. Famous Beatle John Lennon is shot and killed outside his apartment building the Dakota in New York City on the evening of December 8.

In 1979 the world witnesses the following: On March 26, 1979 in Salt Lake City in the most-watched game in American basketball history at the time, Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans defeat Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores 75-64 in the NCAA Tournament’s championship game. Three days later on March 29, the Three Mile Island nuclear plant experiences an accident. On April 1, the first cable television channel for children, Nickelodeon, is launched. Miller City High School’s largest ever class — 66 seniors — graduate on May 18. A week later, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror flick Alien hits theaters in the U.S. In June, McDonald’s introduces the Happy Meal. On November 4 in Tehran, Iran nearly 3,000 Iranian demonstrators storm the U.S. Embassy and take 90 hostages — including 53 of whom are American — kicking off what will be then known as the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Home video game consoles begin to hit the shelves, including the Atari 2600.

In 1978 the world witnesses the following: From January 25-27, the Great Blizzard of 1978 strikes Ohio and much of the Great Lakes region. Approximately 90 deaths, including 51 in Ohio alone, are attributed to the storm. The newest thrill ride at Cedar Point is twin-track rollercoaster Gemini. In May in Miller City, Ohio 60 seniors say goodbye to Miller City High School. A few weeks later on June 16, the musical film Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John is released. In December, the movie version of Superman starring Christopher Reeve in the title role is released in theaters across the country. Popular children’s gifts that year include Hungry Hungry Hippos, Simon Says, Connect Four and Matchbox Powertrack.

In 1977 the world witnesses the following: The most popular toy of 1977 is the hand-held Mattel Football game. The world’s first personal computer, the Commodore PET, is demonstrated at the winter Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago in January. Near the end of May George Lucas’s science fiction movie Star Wars is released in theaters and the Miller City High School Class of 1977 graduates 54 seniors. On August 10, New York City serial killer David Berkowitz, aka “The Son of Sam”, is taken into custody in Yonkers after over a year of being on the loose. Six days later at his home in Graceland, rock ‘n roll icon Elvis Presley dies at the age of 42. On December 16, disco-themed movie Saturday Night Fever hits theatres.

In 1976 the world witnesses the following: On ABC on the evening of January 27, television sitcom Laverne & Shirley makes its debut. On April 1 in California, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak form the Apple Computer Company. In May, 55 Miller City High School seniors graduate. Cedar Point debuts its newest rollercoaster, The Corkscrew. On July 4, the United States celebrates the U.S. Bicentennial — the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Eight days later on ABC, the first episode of Family Feud appears. On July 18, fourteen-year old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci becomes the first to score a perfect “10” for her uneven bars routine at the Montreal Olympics. In October, Cincinnati’s “Big Red Machine” sweeps the New York Yankees to win back-to-back World Series titles. On November 2, Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter defeats incumbent President Gerald Ford to win the U.S. presidential election. On November 20, Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky premiered in New York City theatres.

In 1975 the world witnesses the following: Wheel of Fortune makes its debut on January 6 on NBC. On March 31, John Wooden coaches his last game as his UCLA Bruins win their 10th national championship, defeating Kentucky 92-85. The Miller City High School Class of 1975 graduates 47 seniors on May 23. On June 20, in theaters across the country, Steven Spielberg’s movie Jaws makes its premiere. Saturday Night Live makes its television debut on October 11 on NBC. Eleven days later at Boston’s Fenway Park the Cincinnati Reds win Game 7 to clinch a thrilling World Series over the Red Sox. In a November 29 letter to Paul Allen, Bill Gates uses the name “Micro-soft” for the first time. One of the most popular children’s gifts in 1975 is a See ‘n Say.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1974.
In 1974 the world witnesses the following: On January 15, Happy Days premieres on ABC. At the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on April 2, The Sting starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford wins Best Picture. Six days later, Atlanta Braves outfielder Henry “Hank” Aaron hits career home run #715 eclipsing the record held by legendary Yankee Babe Ruth. In May, 50 Miller City High School seniors graduate. On August 8, President Nixon announces his resignation due to the fallout from the Watergate scandal. Motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump across the Snake River Canyon in Idaho on September 8 using a rocket-powered cycle called the Skycycle X-2. The jump failed due to a parachute malfunction, but Knievel survived with minor injuries. On October 30, Muhammad Ali knocks out George Foreman to regain the heavyweight boxing title in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” bout in Kinshasa, Zaire. The most popular children’s toy was Atari’s home version of Pong.

In 1973 the world witnesses the following: In Super Bowl VII, Don Shula’s Miami Dolphins complete the NFL’s only perfect season as they defeat the Washington Redskins 14-7. On January 27, President Nixon signs the Paris Peace Accords, thus ending the United States’s involvement in the war in Vietnam. On March 26, CBS debuts two television shows, The Young and the Restless and The $10,000 Pyramid. On April 3, in New York City the world’s first handheld cellular phone call is made by inventor Martin Cooper. The following day, also in New York, the World Trade Center opens its doors. On May 17, televised Senate hearings begin on the Watergate scandal. In Miller City, Ohio 64 seniors walk down the aisle that same month to receive their Miller City High School diplomas. At the Belmont Stakes on June 9, Secretariat wins by a whopping 31 lengths winning horse racing’s Triple Crown. On September 20, in front of 30,492 spectators at the Houston Astrodome and an estimated 90 million television viewers, tennis player Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs in straight sets in what was known as The Battle of the Sexes.
