We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1972. In 1972 the world witnesses the following: On March 15, Director Francis Ford Coppola’s fictional organized crime film The Godfather premieres in New York City’s Loew’s State Theatre. In May, 51 Miller City High School seniors receive their diplomas. On June 17, five men are arrested for burglary at the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. in the first event of what would later become the Watergate scandal. On the morning of September 5 at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany two Israeli team members are killed and nine more are taken hostage by eight members of the terrorist organization Black September. Nearly 20 hours later at an airport outside Munich, the nine remaining Israeli hostages are killed during an attempted rescue. Television sitcom M*A*S*H premieres on CBS on September 17. Incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon defeats Democratic challenger George McGovern in the November 7 U.S. general election. The most popular children’s toy was The Big Wheel. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1973.

We're delighted to share some incredible news from the recent Putnam County Fine Arts Festival, which took place on March 9th at Ottoville High School. Our Miller City High School students showcased their immense talent, contributing a total of 175 captivating artworks to the festival! Among our talented participants 32 Merit Ribbons were proudly awarded, recognizing the exceptional creativity and dedication demonstrated by our students. But the excitement doesn't end there! We're thrilled to highlight the outstanding achievements of three of our students: Belle, Mya, and Isabelle. These remarkable individuals have not only showcased their talent but have also earned the prestigious Best of Show awards!

Three of our talented students have not only contributed to the exhibition but have also earned noteworthy recognition: 🥉 Anna secured 3rd place in the drawing category. 🥈 Kyla achieved 2nd place in assemblage. 🥉 Mya claimed 3rd place in assemblage as well. We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1971. In 1971 the world witnesses the following: On January 12, CBS debuts television sitcom All in the Family. On May 16, a U.S. first-class postage stamp increases in cost from 6 cents to 8 cents. Five days later on May 21, Miller City High School graduates 54 seniors. On June 30, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder in the title role debuts in theaters. On July 5, the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (Right to Vote) is certified by President Nixon, officially lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. On the first day of October, theme park Walt Disney World opens in Orlando, Florida. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1972.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1970. In 1970 the world witnesses the following: On February 2, LSU’s “Pistol” Pete Maravich becomes the first college basketball player to score over 3,000 career points. Two days later, military biopic Patton starring George C. Scott premieres in New York City. On March 7, the eastern seaboard of the United States is in the path of a total solar eclipse. An Ohio newspaper headline -- "Millions See Eclipse; Next Showing in 2024" -- details the event. In April, Apollo 13 with astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert experience an explosion aboard their spacecraft which forces them to abort their planned mission to the moon. Back on Earth, NASA flight controllers and engineers begin to work with the crew to bring them safely home. On April 17, after many perilous moments, the spacecraft safely splashes down in the Pacific Ocean. On May 4, four students at Kent State University are killed by members of the Ohio National Guard during an anti-war protest on campus. A senior class of 54 graduates from Miller City High School on May 22. Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati opens on June 30. On September 21, ABC’s Monday Night Football makes its debut as the host Cleveland Browns defeat Joe Namath’s New York Jets 31-21. The most popular children’s Christmas toy in 1970 is a Lite-Brite. We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1969. In 1969 the world witnesses the following: On January 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes defeat O.J. Simpson and the 2nd-ranked USC Trojans 27-10, giving the Buckeyes and Woody Hayes an undisputed national championship. On May 18, Apollo 10 launches from Kennedy Space Center in Florida and would eventually transmit the first color pictures of Earth from space. Five days after Apollo 10’s launch on May 23, Miller City High School’s Class of 1969 graduates 45 seniors. As part of the Apollo 11 mission Wapakoneta, Ohio native Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong and the crew land on the surface of the moon shortly after 3pm EST that afternoon. At 10:56 EST that evening with nearly the whole world watching, Armstrong emerges from the lunar module, descends the exterior ladder and upon stepping on the surface utters the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” From August 15-18 in upstate New York, the famous Woodstock music festival takes place. On November 10 on PBS the children’s show Sesame Street makes its debut. The muscle car for 1969 is the Chevy Camaro. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1970.

In 1968 the world witnesses the following: Musician Johnny Cash records a live album at California’s Folsom State Prison on January 13. On February 11 Madison Square Garden opens in New York City. A week later, NET (PBS) televises the first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. On March 31 President Lyndon B. Johnson surprisingly announces he will not seek re-election in November’s general election. On April 2, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey premieres in Washington, D.C. On April 4, Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. 39 seniors graduate from Miller City High School on May 24. On the evening of June 5, leading Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy is shot in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles just seconds after giving his California primary victory speech. He would pass away the following morning. The primetime news show 60 Minutes debuts on CBS on September 24. In October, the Detroit Tigers behind pitcher Denny McLain win the World Series 4 games to 3 over the St. Louis Cardinals. In the November presidential election, Republican Richard M. Nixon defeats Democratic nominee Hubert H. Humphrey. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1969.

The first Super Bowl is played in January at the Los Angeles Coliseum with Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. On February 2, the American Basketball Association is formed. On May 23, Miller City High School graduates its largest class to date as forty-three seniors receive their diplomas. The Beatles’ latest album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band hits #1 in the U.S. on July 1. On July 11, ABC premieres its newest game show, The Newlywed Game. In September, sketch comedy show The Carol Burnett Show premieres on CBS. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1968.

In 1966 the world witnesses the following: On May 3, WDHO (now WNWO) TV channel 24 in Toledo, Ohio begins broadcasting. About an hour’s drive south of Toledo just three weeks later, 37 Miller City High School seniors graduate on May 24. On September 8, the classic science-fiction show Star Trek makes its television debut on NBC. Film actor Ronald Reagan is elected Governor of California in November. Walt Disney passes away in December at the age of 65. That same month the television adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas airs on CBS for the first time. The average price of a movie theater ticket was $1.00 and the popular children’s Christmas gift was Twister. Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1967.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1965. In 1965 the world witnesses the following: A loaf of bread costs 21 cents, a dozen eggs are 53 cents and a gallon of milk costs $1.05. On March 2, famous musical film The Sound of Music premieres at the Rivoli Theater in New York City. At the Academy Awards in April, My Fair Lady takes home 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. On May 25, Muhammad Ali knocks out Sonny Liston to retain the heavyweight boxing title. The following day Miller City High School graduates 37 seniors. In October in St. Louis, the 630-foot tall parabolic structure The Gateway Arch is completed. The classic car of the year is the 1965 Ford Mustang Tomorrow 100 Days, 100 Classes celebrates the Class of 1966.

Congratulations to Isabelle R.! Her artwork was accepted in the 54th Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition. There were 8,113 entires and just 319 were chosen for this exhibit. The artwork will be on display from April 21 through May 16, 8:00am - 5:00 pm weekdays only at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus.
